Eco-Friendly Ideas for Halloween

Eco-Friendly Ideas for Halloween
Halloween is a log of fun, but like many of our holidays, it can place a drain on the environment. That's why it's always wise to go green! A plus side to going green for this Halloween is that you will feel energized the day after Halloween (which is a on a school night this year), and you will have loads of fun. Before the big day, read about what you need to do to get ready:

Use Green Transportation for Trick or Treat

It's tempting to take your vehicle out for trick-or-treating, but consider how this can go. You move along slowly in your vehicle as your kids go from house to house. Not every house gives out candy, which means kids constantly climb in and out. You run the risk of hitting other kids, and it creates a lot of traffic. You can also end up wasting a lot of gasoline doing so. Opt for walking or biking. Walking can be done easily around the block. You can use bikes for longer distances. If you have little ones, you can use a bike trailer to pull them around. Consider using a wagon you can pull around too.

Hand Out Organic Candy or Treats

Kids get plenty of candy on Halloween. In fact, they get so much candy that it can far surpass what they could possibly eat well into November. Passing out organic treats is far better for children, but you'll be the hero this Halloween if you hand them out. Think of how many times you have gone trick-or-treating with your kids and wished for a healthy treat to eat or water to drink. Consider handing out organic granola bars, fruit, dried fruit or sugar-free candy, chocolate and lollipops. Hand out water to anyone who is thirsty.

Use Solar Powered Lamps

At night, you want to be safe while trick-or-treating. Consider solar powered lamps and flashlights for you and your kids to carry around. These will help other trick-or-treaters and people in vehicles be able to see you and your children. There are several solar powered Halloween lanterns to choose from too. Kids and teenagers love to carry around Halloween lanterns because they're more festive.

Host an Eco-Friendly Party

You can serve a variety of healthy treats that taste good. Grapes can be made into fake eyeballs. You could cut up apple slices and serve it with vegan caramel sauce. Roasted pumpkin seeds are a perfect Halloween treat. You can make many other organic treats that provide a sweet taste without all of the corn syrup that usually accompanies Halloween treats.

Consider several eco-friendly decorations for your Halloween party. You can use empty milk containers to make lanterns with ghost faces. You can line your driveway with these or have them in your home. Old jars and larger plastic containers are also excellent for creating lanterns. You can make silhouettes of jack-o-lantern faces, witches and other Halloween figures on them. Use lawn solar lights to light them up. Solar lights also come in strings, which you can use to add an enchanting glow to your party. Simply charge your solar lights during the day. You can make a trip to your local thrift store to pick up second-hand decorations as well.

After the fun is over, enjoy a relaxing cup of tea by candlelight. Happy Halloween!
